January 28 is Data Privacy Day, an internationally recognized day to empower companies and individuals to discuss and implement ways to safeguard data and respect online privacy. In other words, it's an excellent excuse to get your online life in order! Here are some things you can do right now to keep your online data secure and protect yourself from becoming a victim of cybercrime: Recognize Email Phishing Scams: Scammers may send emails from companies you use — like social networking sites, banks, or stores — asking you to confirm personal information or click on a link to make a payment. Call the company directly to verify any issue if you receive an email like this. Share Less Information: By sharing as little personal information about yourself online as possible, you can limit the amount of data the apps and services you use collect. Scammers can hack this information and use it to access your accounts. Skip any optional information when setting up accounts and use a throwaway email address for subscriptions. Keep Software Updated: Critical updates and patches help your devices function better and keep them more secure. Skip Public Wi-Fi: When outside your secure network, use a VPN or cellular connection to keep your data safe. Make Your Passwords More Secure: Use multiple, complex passwords to access different online accounts and change them anytime they've been compromised. When offered, always enable multi-factor authentication for an added layer of security. Use a password manager to track of your passwords and keep them secure. Clean Up Your Apps: Remove apps and browser extensions you are no longer using. Limit use of third-party app connections that allow you to sign in to one service using your log-in from another. (Ex: “sign in with your Google or Apple account.”) Monitor Your Accounts: Regularly check your online financial accounts and credit reports for suspicious spending. Many banks and credit card companies offer text and email alert services. Secure Your Devices Physically: Keeping your online accounts safe is one thing, but you should never leave your electronic devices unattended. Avoid putting them in checked luggage or leaving them in hotel rooms when you're gone. Instead, use safes whenever possible. Be Wary of Ads: If a deal, giveaway, or contest seems too good to be true, avoid it because it probably is! Protecting your information is a priority for us.
